Clinical Pharmacology Chapter 4 Antihypertensive Drugs (1 OF 74) Sample Questions

1. What is the goal of minoxidil topical solution for the treatment of Alopecia?
  1. A. Rejuvenate new hair on bald head.
  2. B. Increase the volume of hair.
  3. C. Stopping the falling hair.
  4. D. Regrow new hair.
  5. E. Stimulate hair follicles.
Answer
Ans: E
Tips: When applied topically, MINOXIDIL TOPICAL 2% SOLUTION has been shown to stimulate hair growth in males with androgenetic alopecia. The basic change in androgenetic alopecia is the conversion of terminal, non-vellus hair to vellus hair, i.e., hair which is thinner, shorter, and less pigmented.
Minoxidil has been shown to be effective for the treatment of male-pattern and female-pattern hair loss. The mechanism of action of minoxidil is unclear but it is thought to stimulate the conversion of small hair follicles to larger follicles. Minoxidil prolongs the duration of the anagen phase and increases hair count and weight. Minoxidil 2% solution is approved for male-pattern hair loss only and minoxidil 5% foam is approved for both male- and female-pattern hair loss. Minoxidil is most effective when started early, prior to the area becoming completely bald. Hair growth is visible within 2 months or more with a maximum effect within a year.

Finasteride 1 mg: In men with male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), the balding scalp contains miniaturized hair follicles and increased amounts of DHT compared with hairy scalp. Administration of finasteride decreases scalp and serum DHT concentrations in these men. By this mechanism, finasteride interrupts a key factor in the development of androgenetic alopecia in those patients genetically predisposed.
